 रक्षाबंधन के मूल में रक्ष् धातु निहित है,इस पर्व पर बांधा जाने वाला सूत्र मात्र तीन धागों का समूह ही नहीं है,अपितु इसमें आत्मरक्षा, धर्मरक्षा एवं राष्ट्ररक्षा के तीनों सूत्र संकल्पबद्ध होते हैं, पौराणिक कथाओं में इस पर्व को मानने के समर्थन में अनेकों दृष्टांत निहित है,वर्तमान परिप्रेक्ष्य में इस पर्व पर भाई अपनी बहन के रक्षार्थ संकल्पित होते है।
