 "पौराणिक उपाख्यान में संदर्भित श्रावण मास में हुए समुंद्र मंथन की परिणीति स्वरूप निकले 14 रत्नों में से एक, हलाहल विष के ताप से जब पूरी सृष्टि त्रायमाम कर उठी, तब देवाधिदेव महादेव ने जगत रक्षार्थ समुंद्र मंथन में निकले गरल को अपने कंठ में रख लिया, किंतु महादेव इस हलाहल के ताप से अत्यंत क्लांत हो उठे, ताप शमन हेतु देवताओं ने कावड़ में जल भर शिव का जलाभिषेक कर स्तुति की, जिससे गरल का ताप शमित हो गया, तभी से भक्तगण हर वर्ष श्रावण मास में कावड़ से शिव का जलाभिषेक कर, शिवकृपा प्राप्त करते आ रहे है।"
